spacious bungalows are built by local craftsman, entirely out of
wood and raised on stilts. All the bungalow are spacious with a
private veranda overlooking a stretch of sandy beach of Indian ocean
and Chole Bay. All bungalows are fully en-suite and fitted with
attractive bathroom furniture, promises personal attention and
service.

Chole Island
- The oldest, still inhabited settlement in the archipelago, with
the ruins of some Arab buildings used by the Germans during the
First World War.
Fungo Marimbani
- A strip of dazzling white sand which appears during low tide,
surrounded by crystal-clear water.
Juani - Blue Lagoon
- The southern point of Juani is bisected by a long channel linking
the huge inland bay with the open sea.
Juani - Kua - On Juani, one of the largest and most characteristic
islands in the archipelago, are the ruins of the ancient city of Kua,
whose decline - as yet unexplained by archaeological and historical
research - is the object of many legends.
Jibondo
- The island of Jibondo is at about an hour's boat-trip from Utende
and is characterised by the unique conformation of the western tip
and the surrounding emerald-green waters.
Kitutia
- Kitutia is one of the archipelago's most beautiful coral reefs
with two strips of fine white sand which remain exposed during low
tide.
Ras Mkumbi
lighthouse - Situated on the west point of Mafia island, the
lighthouse can be reached by a three-hour car-journey taking you
right across the island and its changing landscape.
Bwejuu
- Considered by many to be the most beautiful island in the
archipelago thanks to its position and its sandy banks, Bwejuu is
less than two kilometres long and no more than two hundred metres
wide at its widest point.
Chuwia
- An hour by jeep along a track passing through one of the most
characteristic landscapes of the island and an easy trek though a
stretch of virgin forest take you to one of Chole Bay's most
inaccessible beaches.
Scuba Diving
and Activities
The warm, colourful
waters of the Indian Ocean surrounding Mafia Island provide an ideal
location for many sea activities. Enjoy some of the best diving and
snorkeling there is off the East African coast exploring the many
coral reefs that are teaming with tropical marine life. There are
over 400 species of fish inhabiting the reefs around Mafia Island.
The fully equipped
dive centre for beginners & experienced divers offers PADI
certifications. The best months for scuba diving are September to
March & snorkelling can be done all year round in the sheltered,
calm waters of Chole Bay.
Many islets and
natural, unspoilt sandbars surround Mafia Island. One can enjoy a
picnic lunch at one of these locations after sailing there on a
traditional dhow. There are also the options of sport fishing,
walking or biking on the nature trails, sea kayaking, and other
beach activities that can be enjoyed.
Chole island is
home to a large colony of Comoros Flying Foxes or fruit bats found
only in Mafia and the Comoro Islands and there are also some ancient
ruins remaining on a few of the islets. The ruins date back to the
15th century from the first Arab settlers and are interesting to
visit. One can also experience the friendly culture of the Swahili
people with tours through the local villages. There is a day trip to
the Northern part of Mafia where you will get the to experience of
the full diversity of the fauna and flora on the island, as well as
see some of Mafia's most pristine and beautiful beaches.
